Several members have got in touch regarding the state of the Forest Hill station underpass over the last few months so we wanted to share an update for your information.
The Forest Hill Society has been in touch with Lewisham Council, both with officers and through our councillors, to ensure the works are finished as soon as possible and to ensure we have a safe, and welcoming route between the Perry Vale and Forest Hill sides.
Last year work was carried out to replace some of the electrical cabling outside WH Smiths which meant there were no lights, but we're happy to say that these are now working again.
However, after that work was completed, Network Rail then carried out inspection works that required the removal of all the panelling in the underpass, and some of this has yet to be replaced on the ceiling. The result is that not only does the underpass look less safe, but there is more water that gets through and it is also noisier when trains pass overhead. We have continued to press the council for information and this is what we have been told:
"The panels were taken down by Network Rail in order to carry out a structural inspection. Some significant defects were found which needed urgent repair and these have been completed. However, an additional issue has been identified which still needs to be fixed. We are advised that the work will be completed and the panels will be reinstated within the next 4 -6 weeks."
We do hope that this means we should see the underpass finished soon, but it will probably take another month or so, and should be completed around the beginning of March 2025.
